When you think of protection, what comes to your mind? Most people think immediately of physical protection. However, spiritual protection is just as important to your well-being.

Spiritual protection is about protecting yourself and the energy that you bring into all areas of your life – whether that be personal, spiritual, or work-related.
In the same way that you have a strong immune system to ward off physical illness and disease, your aura (some prefer the word “soul”) needs protection from people that mean to do you harm with their words, energy, and actions.

It’s important to be aware of those who surround you as well as how they interact with you. You need to be aware of the energy that they project as well as how those energies can affect your own.

By being able to identify those people around you who have negative or toxic energy, you are not only protecting yourself from harm, but you’re also protecting those people from harboring more negativity in their lives.

This is a two-way street that will help everyone to be more aware of the energies around them. And while protecting your energy is not a foolproof method, it can serve as a precursor to identifying people that mean you harm and separating yourself from them – if only superficially for the time being.

Here are eleven ways to protect your energy from negative people:

Take care of yourself

When you are feeling physically well, it’s easier to be spiritually well as well. The better your physical health is – the better you take care of yourself in terms of diet, exercise, rest – the more energy you’ll have for other aspects of your life.

Taking a hard look at the 3 aforementioned aspects of your life does not have to be difficult.

Not everyone can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on elaborate training regimens, but anyone can walk more. Not everyone has the time to prepare meals that are entirely organic, but anyone can go through an occasional fast and drink more water. The same goes for resting and sleeping well – we all have our obligations, but everyone CAN find the time to rest more by cutting out some unnecessary activities like browsing social media and gossip sites.

In a nutshell – when your body is working at its best, your mind and spirit can function at their best as well.

Avoid people who have negative, toxic energy

If someone makes you feel uncomfortable or uneasy, they may not mean to do so on a conscious level. However, it is likely that your intuition is warning you away from them for a reason – even if you don’t know exactly what that reason is. Commonly, these kinds of hunches are known as “gut feelings.”

And, perhaps surprisingly, modern research is starting to understand that “gut feelings” are very real.
So, be aware of the energies around you and stay away from those who make you feel uncomfortable or uneasy – at least until they can prove to you that their energy is harmless.

Obviously, there are people you simply can’t avoid. You can’t tell your boss to cancel that team meeting because of bad energy. In unavoidable scenarios, simply staying mindful and observing your personal energy can be a great start for creating a barrier from bad energy.

Meditate daily

Meditating is one of the best ways to protect your energy because it centers you before taking on the brutal world.

When you meditate daily, you are removing yourself from the energies that surround you and then returning to them with a clear mind and an open heart that is not only aware of but more receptive to the good vibrations around it.

Whether you meditate for five minutes or twenty, it can have a lasting effect on your energy. Contrary to popular opinion, meditation does not need a dedicated time and place. It is actually possible to stay in a meditative mindset while you work or do other everyday activities.

There are loads of free resources online to get started with meditation. For example, you can start by looking up beginner-friendly meditation tutorials on YouTube.

Release your negative thoughts and attitudes about love

What you focus on, you become. This might sound hokey, but I have had tens if not hundreds of experiences where my reality has reflected my thoughts.

If your thoughts are constantly going to negative places and the things around you appear to be crumbling down, chances are that’s how your energy will respond as well. As much as possible, imagine yourself surrounded by a bubble of protection from all those who would bring harm to your energy – both consciously and unconsciously.

One of my personal secrets is to imagine benevolent historical figures guiding me whenever I have to deal with negative people. I usually turn to Nelson Mandela or Gandhi, but feel free to choose your own guiding figures. If something more personal works better, you can also imagine a benevolent person from your own life, such as a parent or a best friend.

Meditate on positive images and scenes from nature

Positive energy is all around you and if you tune yourself to it every single day, you’ll become more aware of where it exists and how it can surround and protect you when necessary.

Nature represents growth and positivity. Thus, meditating on nature can help you cultivate a mindset of tranquility and abundance.

Dedicate a part of your day to visualizing grand scenes of nature. For example, when you need strength, try thinking about the force of a centuries-old waterfall. When you need peace, try thinking about the vastness of an ocean.

This trick takes only minutes but can do small wonders for the state of your energy.

Don't dwell on negative people and situations

Remind yourself daily that there is no point in worrying about what hasn’t happened yet or what may not happen for a long time – if at all.

Dwelling on the negatives takes up valuable energy that could be used in a positive manner. Instead, spend your energy thinking about what is good and right. If you are struggling with finding anything positive in the present moment, turn to other exercises on this list such as visualizing scenes from nature or visualizing benevolent figures.

Breathe deeply to ground yourself in the present moment

When you are able to ground yourself in the present moment, it’s easier to keep your energy from drifting too far into the future or drifting back to the past.

When you can feel what’s going on in your body and your mind, you’ll also be able to identify when something is off and it’s time for more of a proactive approach than a reactive one.

The quickest way of grounding yourself to the present moment is by meditating or doing mindfulness breathing exercises.

Breathing is something we rarely pay attention to, but it can be one of the best tools for protecting your energy and finding spiritual well-being.

Use crystals and other tools to help protect your energy

Crystals are powerful allies that can help you protect your energy naturally. Amethyst, selenite, quartz, labradorite, and other crystals are all great protective energy tools to have on hand at all times – whether they’re tucked into a pocket or worn as jewelry.

They reflect negative energy away from you and absorb positive energy without you even having to think about it.

Different crystals have different properties – for example, labradorite reduces stress while quartz is great for improving concentration and memory. It would be a great idea to carry different crystals at different times.

For example, labradorite would work well for winding down after a hard day at work while quartz would work better for preparing a mentally demanding task like a business presentation.

Practice keeping a positive attitude

When you find yourself thinking or saying something negative, stop and remind yourself that this isn’t how you want to be feeling – especially since no one else has control over your thoughts except for you.

For example, gossiping has been a major source of negative energy in my life. For years, I viewed gossiping about other people as innocent small talk that hurts no one. I was wrong. In fact, I often found myself mentally drained and full of negativity in the evening.

The same goes for negative thoughts – no human being or situation is completely perfect. Casting negative judgment on what surrounds you is never helpful. Even if you do not voice your opinions out loud.

Feed your spirit and mind with positive art

Another great way of protecting your energy is by consuming art that is lighthearted and positive. Have you ever noticed that it is next to impossible to dwell on the negative after watching a comedy movie you love?

Music works in a similar manner – cheerful melodies have been lifting the spirits of human beings for centuries.

Next time you are feeling down, listen to a piece of music that you associate with good memories. It is virtually guaranteed that your energy will reach a higher frequency.

Create a personal energy protection retreat

Ideally, you will want your home to be a safe space full of positive associations, vibrant colors, and art that you love.

That said, not everyone lives alone. You have to consider the needs of other people as well.

If that is the case, find a room (or even a corner of a room) that is completely yours.
Feel free to decorate this place with items that you have positive associations with – crystals, your favorite records, photos…everything positive works. This practice works best if you keep this space your own little secret. No one has to know why these particular things are in that place.

Creating our own little spiritual retreat sounds like a massive undertaking but it does not have to be.

I sincerely hope that these 11 tips will help you protect your spiritual energy so that you can perform well in all aspects of life.

We all deserve to feel good about ourselves and have the ability to be completely present in every moment, both at work and in our private lives.

From this day on, I call you to start protecting your energy just like you protect your loved ones, your belongings, and everything else important to you.
