In order to improve our lives, we often think that we need to make massive and time-consuming changes – our job, our relationships, or even where we live.
But sometimes the answer is much simpler than that. All we need to do is work on our mental attitude. To be more specific – we need to work on creating a positive mental attitude. Sure, it takes some work to change our mindset, but the results are well worth it.
Whether we are talking about finances, relationships, or even our physical health, a positive mental attitude can have a profound effect on our lives.
So how can we go about creating this mindset? It is much more simple than you might think.
Here are 11 tips that have helped me and countless others build a lasting positive mindset:
Protect yourself from negativity
When you’re surrounded by people with negative attitudes, it’s easy to adopt their mentality as your own. People around you may often say things such as “I don’t deserve good things” or “If only I had more money/a more fit body/a better job”.
At first glance, sentences like this can seem innocent enough, but hear them each and every day and you will adopt a similar mindset soon enough. Not good!
This type of thinking needs to stop because those types of negative thoughts can become self-fulfilling prophecies.
Negative thoughts lead to self-pity and self-pity leads to laziness and little accomplishments. This is a downward spiral. A downward spiral that can be avoided by distancing yourself from negative people.
The correlation here is very simple – if you’re surrounded by people who are positive, then you will be more likely to surround yourself with positive thinking habits.
Be grateful for what you have
We are quick to complain when things go wrong, but we don’t take the time out of our day to think about all the things we are thankful for. And, it is easy to see why – modern society has gotten us fixated on everything we lack. Why? Well, a truly satisfied individual is obviously not that good for business.
That said, materialistic thinking is not always bad – I love beautiful things as much as the next girl. But, to create a positive mental attitude, you sometimes need to simply be grateful for what you already have.
Easier said than done, right?
Well, even if you are currently struggling, you will find something to be grateful for if you look hard enough. Why not start simple and be grateful for your consciousness, your ability to breathe, and the fact that you are able to learn new things?
Talking about being grateful almost seems like a cliché. After all, gratefulness is something that nearly every spiritual guru, productivity hacker, and powerful CEO will preach. But, there is a good reason for that – being thankful does wonders for your well-being.
Visualize positive outcomes
It is true that some people are born with a more positive mindset. That said, the fact that you are a natural pessimist does not have to mean that things have to stay that way! It is possible to learn how to harness positive thoughts at will.
How? Well, visualization is a time-tested method that has worked for me and countless other people.
While there are several different visualization techniques, I advise you to start simple. Try to simply envision everything you do going perfectly.
For example, let’s say that you have a big presentation coming up at work. If that would be the case, I would imagine the presentation going perfectly. I would imagine the impressed expression on my boss, the confidence in my voice, and the sound of applause.
And, guess what? Usually, this perfect scenario does play out in real life. Next time you are feeling off, try positive visualization. It is such a popular technique for a reason.
Examine your words carefully
Your words have enormous power! A power that can either be a negative or a positive influence on your life.
The thing is, every word you say affects yourself and those around you. So, watch out for your speech carefully!
Obviously, it would be unrealistic to avoid all negativity – there are situations where negative feedback or criticism is necessary. If so, try to provide your criticisms from a place of empathy. In disagreements, always have the end goal of solving the issue at hand. Even the harshest of arguments can have a positive outcome if both sides are working towards a compromise.
Now, when it comes to something like swearing, gossiping, and shaming…you will want to avoid these things altogether. Not only will you potentially hurt other people, but you will also disturb your own peace of mind.
Unnecessary meanness is always an obstacle in your path to creating a positive mental attitude.
Study positive role models
Many people look up to celebrities for fashion advice or workout routines – why not look up to them for positive thoughts and positive actions?
Everybody has a different opinion of what exactly positive role models are, but the main idea here is simple. A positive role model is someone who always has an optimistic outlook on life. Even in situations of great stress.
Some of the examples that first came to my mind were people like Keanu Reeves and Will Smith. Both of these celebrities have endured a lot, yet they never fail to see the goodness in other people and life in general.
That said, your positive role does not necessarily have to be a celebrity. It could just as well be someone from your family or circle of friends.
For example, my grandfather is one of my personal positive role models. This is a man who has seen war, poverty, and breakdowns of some of the most important relationships of his life. Yet, I have never seen this man get resentful or bitter. In fact, I have never heard him say a single negative word about another person.
If this is not relentless optimism, then I don’t know what is.
Discuss positive things with others
When someone compliments you on something good that happened, don’t brush it off as if it wasn’t a big deal!
Instead, thank them and tell them how good it feels to be complimented. Even better, give a sincere compliment in return!
Imagine if everybody just focused and talked about the positive things that happened to them instead of dwelling on the inevitable daily stressors. What a positive world that would be!
Always remember positive past experiences
To create a lasting positive mental attitude, it is important to have and hold your positive memories.
Positive memories will allow you to scrutinize the negativity if it starts creeping up on you. Think of every positive memory as something you will deposit into your “positivity bank.”
Every time you feel hopeless and lost, go into your mental “positivity bank” and think about all those positive experiences. Not only will you start to feel better, but you will also feel much more hopeful about the future. The fact that you have had so many positive experiences can only mean one thing – more good things are eventually bound to happen in your life.
Don't dwell on your mistakes
Everybody makes mistakes. Even the people who seemingly perform perfectly in all areas of their lives.
What ultimately makes the difference is not how many mistakes you make, but how you learn from your mistakes.
This goes back to positive thinking habits because positive thinkers don’t let their mistakes bring them down.
Instead, positive thinkers acknowledge and learn from those mistakes so they can avoid making those same mistakes in the future. In a paradoxical way, the more mistakes a positive thinker makes the better his or her chances of improving their long-term quality of life.
Be proud of yourself
Another simple tip that is often forgotten – if you’re not proud of yourself every now and then, you will feel a sense of lack all too often. This is not good for someone looking to create a positive mental attitude.
If you accomplish something, credit yourself and take some time to feel genuine pride in yourself. Let those warm feelings of power, accomplishment, and determination wash over you.
Over time, you will notice that these feelings will start to appear randomly. This will lead you to become a more positive person in your day-to-day life.
Replace bad habits with positive ones
If you have a bad habit such as chewing your nails, biting the inside of your cheek, or smoking cigarettes, try to replace these habits with positive ones such as deep breathing or counting the number of breaths you take. These positive habits won’t just help your positive thinking, they will also keep you calmer, more relaxed, and healthier in general.
When it comes to changing habits, most experts will advise you to start slow. Do not try to change all of your habits at once. Instead, focus on eliminating one negative habit at a time. That way, you will increase your chances of long-term success.
Laugh as much as possible
Laughter is one of the best ways to relieve stress – positive thinkers understand that fact and allow themselves to laugh as often as possible. Why not spend half an hour each day just looking at some good memes? Waste of time? Not true!
If you are not that big on memes and funny cat videos, seek out the company of your funniest friend.
Remember that laughter is a true medicine of the soul. And, people with a positive mental attitude are well aware of that.
They consciously seek humor in their daily lives. And, by laughing each day, they reinforce their identities as more positive and successful people.
